Guild Artifacts

The journeyman’s walking stick is required during his Tour of France, and for all the guild ceremonies. It symbolizes the itinerant life of the journeyman and the refinement of his skills. It is generally made of wood or bamboo, with a medallion engraved with personal identification: his guild name, his emblems, and the city and date of his certification, mounted on a pommel or knob.

The “colors” are scarves of silk or velvet decorated with symbols, inscriptions and embroidery specific to each trade and their traditions. The colors of the carpenter’s guild “The Duty of Freedom” were white, red or green. They were originally worn as a sash, or were attached to the buttonhole on the left jacket lapel.
